Sri Vidyadheesha Theertha

Sri Vidyadheesha Theertha is the 32nd saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Vidyadheesha Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Bhuvanendra Theertha of Puttige mutt and ruled the Peeta for 66 years. He belongs to family of Madikulnaya. After having Upanayana in 8th year he learnt sumadhwavijaya under Sri Bhuvanendra Theertha of Puttige mutt. When Sri Vidyasamudra Theertha died without giving ashrama to anyone, Sri Bhuvanendra Theertha gave him Ashrama and made him head of Krishnapura mutt. Puttige mutt being the dwandwa mutt of Krishnapura mutt saints of either mutt can give Ashrama to any of the two mutts if one the saint of any mutt dies without giving Ashrama to anyone.

After taking sanyasa from Sri Bhuvanendra Theertha, Sri Vidyadheesha Theertha learnt all Shastras from him only. Later he studied nyaya shastra in Kashi for 12 years. Kashi Timmannacharya also studied along with him in Kashi. There after he returned to Udupi and did Sudha mangala for more than 12 times. His prominent sanyasa sishyas were Viswaraja Theertha (Pejawar mutt), Viswadheesha Theertha (Sode mutt), and Lakshmivallabha Theertha (Shiroor mutt). Other prominent sishyas include Kanchi Subbaraya, Jambukhandi Vadirajacharya, and Balekuduru Venkatacharya etc.

He installed Mukhyaprana in Prayaga and Danda theertha mutts. When Sri Sumateendra Theertha of Puttige mutt gave Ashrama to his relative without any shastric background, Sri Vidyadheesha Theertha opposed it and gave Ashrama to other person and named him Sri Sudheendra Theertha. Later he won this in court also.

Later he went to Tirupati for lord’s darshan and faced some problem in having darshan. He decided to go on fast till he gets darshan, as a miracle the temple authorities came and invited him with great honor for darshan.

The swamiji of krishNApura maTa had attained brindAvana without annointing a successor. The responsibility of identifying a successor fell on the maTAdhipathi of the dwandwa maTa - shri bhuvanEndra tIrtharu of puthige maTa. He noticed that a boy was chanting sumadhwavijaya with his hands raised even while sleeping. He decided that the boy was the right person to become a sanyAsigaLu. He gave him sanyAsa, named him as vidyAdIsha tIrtharu and annointed him to the krishNApura maTa. Shri vidyAdIsha tIrtharu did all his studies under shri bhuvanEndra tIrtharu. He also studied nyaya Shastra in kashi for 12 years. Shri kashi timmaNAchAryaru studied in kashi along with shri vidyAdIsha tIrtharu. 

shri vidyAdIsha tIrtharu was a great scholar and a holy Saint. He was an aparOksha jnAnigaLu. srigaLu did Sri Sudha Mangala Mahotsava 12 times including the 27 TippaNIs. All TippaNIs and Sudha Grantha was "mukhodgata" to Srigalu.

He did krishNa paryAya 4 times. 

The pontiffs of pEjAvara (vishwarAja tIrtharu) , Shirur (lakshmivallabha tIrtharu) and Sode Matha (vishwAdIsha tUrtharu) at that time and a score of other laymen received their higher education under him. Shri jambhukhanDi vAdirAjAchAryaru, the one who staunchly believed in and propagated the rujutva of shri vAdirAja tIrtharu, was also his shishyaru.

shri jambhukhaNDi vAdirAjAchAryaru was awarded the title of 'sudhAkarAchArya' because of Acharya's strong knowledge in Sri Sudha Grantha including the 27 TippaNIs. Sri jamakhaNDi AchArya defeated Kashmiri Shaivadvaiti Pandits single handedly and got honoured with Golden and Ivory Pallakkis. He did samarpane of these to shri vidyAdhIsha tIrtharu as Guru dakshiNa. The same Pallakki can be seen in Sri Krishnapura maTa even now. The gold used for Pallakki has been used in the present day Gold Pallakki in Udupi for pallakki sEvA and was donated by Sri vidyApUrNa tIrtharu, the shishyaru of shri vidyAdIsha tIrtharu.

 

shri vidyAdIsha tIrtharu installed the idol of Sri mukhyaprANa both at Prayaga and danDa tIrtha. He got made a gold mantapa for the pUja of his deity. He also renovated the Math in Krishnapur. 

The pontiff of Sri Puttige maTa, shri sudhIndra tIrtha, who lived 100 years received his sanyAsa, from vidyAdIsha tIrtharu.

His mUla brindAvanA is in Bengaluru. It is at KR Market. He had aparOxsha jnAna that he would be born as a Muslim in his next birth. Hence to avoid that he selected his resting place in Muslim area so that he can get rid of his prArabhdha karma from the brindAvanA itself by listening to the Muslim prayers everyday. His mrithika brindAvanA at sindhanUr is also in a Muslim locality.

The maTA in KR Market also has shri kaDagOlu krishNa, praNadEvaru, pratime of shri bhAvi samIra vAdirAjaru and mrithika brindAvana of shri rAyaru.

His brindavan is in a temple in the KR Market area of Bangalore. At that time, Sri Bhuvanendra Theertha Swamiji of Puthige Mutt started searching for the right candidate and one night heard one bright young boy chanting in his sleep one verse of Madhwa Vijaya relating to vairagya and seeking of sanyasa, and immediately ordained that boy as the head of Krishnapura Mutt in 1815.He had done sudhamangala for 12 times. He iss gurugalu for jambukhandi vadirajacharyaru.Also Ashrama gurugalu for Puthige mathiya shatayushi Sudhindra teertharu. Once Sri Vidyadheesha Theertha Swamiji was camping in the Suratkal area and one evening a passing traveller came to the mutt and sought a meal. The mutt staff said nothing was leftover and declined to serve him. Swamiji stepped in and offered him a vessel and rice to cook. Swamiji went to sleep. The next morning the traveller was not to be seen in the mutt. But the vessel given to him for cooking had been washed and placed in a corner. Swamiji looked at the vessel and was surprised to see that it had turned into gold. It is believed that the Lord had come to the mutt in the form of a traveller. The gold vessel was later offered to the Lord in the form of a cradle. " ಶ್ರೀ ಭುವನೇಂದ್ರ ತೀರ್ಥರ ಪರಮಾನುಗ್ರಹ " ಒಂದುದಿನ ರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಭುವನೇಂದ್ರ ತೀರ್ಥರು ಶ್ರೀ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣೆಯಾಗಿ ದೀಪ ಸಹಿತರಾಗಿ ಬಂದರು. ಆದ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ದೇವರೆದುರಿನ ಚಂದ್ರಸಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಲಗಿರುವ ಈ ಬಾಲಕನು ಕನಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕನವರಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಕೈಗಳನ್ನು ತಲೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಜೋಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು.... " ಯದಾ ವಿರಕ್ಹಃ ಪುರುಷಃ ಪ್ರಜಾಯತೇ " ಎಂಬ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನುಉಚ್ಚರಿಸಿದನು. ಕೂಡಲೇ ಶ್ರೀ ಭುವನೇಂದ್ರ ತೀರ್ಥರು ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಓದಿ ದೀಪದ ಬೆಳಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಬಾಲಕನನ್ನು ಕಂಡರೂ. ಆಗ ಆ ಬಾಲಕನು ತೇಜ:ಪುಂಜನಾಗಿಯೂ - ವಿರಕ್ತ ಶಿಖಾಮಣಿಯಾಗಿಯೂ ಕಂಡನು. ಕೂಡಲೇ ಶ್ರೀ ಭುವನೇಂದ್ರ ತೀರ್ಥ ಗುರುವರೇಣ್ಯರು ಈ ವಟುವಿನ ಮುಖದಿಂದ ಆಗಿರುವ ಶುಭ ಸೂಚನೆಯಿಂದ ಆನಂದ ಹೊಂದಿ - ಬೆಳಗಾದ ಮೇಲೆ ಈ ವಟುವಿನ ಕುಲ ಗೋತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ವಿಚಾರಿಸಿ - ಸತ್ಕುಲ ಪ್ರಸೂತನೆಂದು ಖಚಿತ ಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು - ಇವನೇ ಈ ಶ್ರೀ ಜನಾರ್ದನ ತೀರ್ಥರ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನಾಧಿಪತಿಗಳಾಗಲು ಯೋಗ್ಯನೆಂದು ನಿರ್ಣಯವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು... ತುರ್ಯಾಶ್ರಮವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟು - ಪ್ರಣವ ಮಂತ್ರೋಪದೇಶ ಮಾಡಿ " ಶ್ರೀ ವಿದ್ಯಾಧೀಶ ತೀರ್ಥ " ರೆಂದು ನಾಮಕರಣ ಮಾಡಿ - ತಮ್ಮ ಅಮೃತ ಮಾಯವಾದ ಹಸ್ತಗಳಿಂದ ವೇದಾಂತ ದಿಗ್ವಿಜಯ ವಿದ್ಯಾ ಸಿಂಹಾಸನದಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳ್ಳಿರಿಸಿ ಪಟ್ಟಾಭಿಷೇಕ ಮಾಡಿ " ಶ್ರೀ ಕೃಷ್ಣಾಪುರ ಮಠಕ್ಕೆ ಪೀಠಾಧಿಪತಿ " ಗಳನ್ನಾಗಿ ನೇಮಿಸಿದರು. " ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸ " ಶ್ರೀ ವಿದ್ಯಾಧೀಶ ತೀರ್ಥರು - ಶ್ರೀ ಭುವನೇಂದ್ರ ತೀರ್ಥರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮಗ್ರ ದ್ವೈತ ವೇದಾಂತವನ್ನು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಿ - ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾದ ಕಾಶೀ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದು ೧೨ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ತರ್ಕ - ಮೀಮಾಂಸಾ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳನ್ನೂ - ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಷಡ್ದರ್ಶನಗಳನ್ನು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಿ ಪ್ರಥಮ ಶ್ರೇಣಿ ಪಂಡಿತರಾಗಿ ಉಡುಪಿಗೆ ಬಂದರು. ಶ್ರೀ ವಿದ್ಯಾಧೀಶ ತೀರ್ಥರಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಪಂಡಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಪರಮಪೂಜ್ಯ ಕಾಶೀ ತಿಮ್ಮಣ್ಣಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಸಹಾಧ್ಯಾಯಿಗಳು ಆಗಿದ್ದರು. " ಅನ್ನದಾನಿಗಳು " ಪರಮಪೂಜ್ಯ ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀಪಾದರು ತಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಯಾಗಾ ಮಠದಲ್ಲೂ - ಶ್ರೀ ಕೃಷ್ಣಾಪುರ ಮಠದಲ್ಲೂ - ದಂಡತೀರ್ಥ ಮಠದಲ್ಲೂ "ಅನ್ನಛತ್ರ ಬೈರಾಗಿ ಛತ್ರ " ಗಳನ್ನಿಡಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಉಡುಪಿಯಲ್ಲೂ - ಕೃಷ್ಣಾಪುರದಲ್ಲೋ ಇರುವ ತಮ್ಮ ಮಠವನ್ನು ಜೀರ್ಣೋದ್ಧಾರ ಕಾರ್ಯ ಮಾಡಿಸಿದ್ದರು. " ಶ್ರೀಮನ್ನ್ಯಾಯಸುಧಾ ಮಂಗಳ " ಪ್ರಾತಃ ಸ್ಮರಣೀಯ ಪರಮಪೂಜ್ಯ ಶ್ರೀ ವಿದ್ಯಾಧೀಶ ತೀರ್ಥರು ೧೨ ಬಾರಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಅನುವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನ ಸಹಿತ ಶ್ರೀಮನ್ನ್ಯಾಯಸುಧಾ ಪರಿಮಳ ಮಂಗಳ ಮಹೋತ್ಸವವನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ವೈಭವದಿಂದ ನೆರವೇರಿಸಿದರು. " ವಿದ್ಯಾ ಶಿಷ್ಯರು " ಶ್ರೀ ಪೇಜಾವರ ಮಠದ ಶ್ರೀ ವಿಶ್ವರಾಜ ತೀರ್ಥರು - ಶ್ರೀ ಸೋದೆ ಮಠದ ಶ್ರೀ ವಿಶ್ವಾಧೀಶ ತೀರ್ಥರು - ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀಮುಷ್ಣ ಸುಬ್ರಯಾಚಾರ್ಯರು - ಶ್ರೀ ಜಂಬುಖಂಡಿ ವಾದಿರಾಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಮೊದಲಾದ ಅನೇಕ ಶಿಷ್ಯರು. " ಶ್ರೀ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಪರ್ಯಾಯ ಮಹೋತ್ಸವ " ಪ್ರಾತಃ ಸ್ಮರಣೀಯ ಪರಮಪೂಜ್ಯ ಶ್ರೀ ವಿದ್ಯಾಧೀಶ ತೀರ್ಥರು ೪ ಪರ್ಯಾಯ ಮಹೋತ್ಸವವನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ವೈಭವದಿಂದ ಆಚರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. " ತಿರುಮಲೆಯ ಚೆಲುವ ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸನ ಕಾರುಣ್ಯ " ಶ್ರೀ ವಿದ್ಯಾಧೀಶ ತೀರ್ಥರು ಶಿಷ್ಯ ಪರಿವಾರದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸನ ದರ್ಶನಾಕಾಂಕ್ಷಿಗಳಾಗಿ ತಿರುಮಲೆಗೆ ದಿಗ್ವಿಜಯ ಮಾಡಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಪುಷ್ಕರಣಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಿಂದು - ಅಹ್ನೀಕ ಮುಗಿಸಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸನ ದರ್ಶನಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ - ದರ್ಶನಕ್ಕೆ ತೊಂದರೆ ಆಗಿ - ದರ್ಶನವಾಗದೆ ಮುಂದಿನ ಯಾವ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡಲಾರೆಯೆಂದು ಕುಳಿತು ಬಿಟ್ಟರು. ಆಗ ಅವರ ವಿದ್ಯಾ ಶಿಷ್ಯರಾದ ಶ್ರೀ ವಾದಿರಾಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಬಂದು ಮಹಾಂತನೊಡನೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿ ಸಕಲ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನೋಚಿತ ಮರ್ಯಾದೆಯಿಂದ ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸನ ದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡಿಸಿದರು. " ನಿರ್ಯಾಣ " ವಿಕ್ರಮ ನಾಮ ಸಂವತ್ಸರ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠ ಬಹುಳ ದ್ವಾದಶೀ ಶನಿವಾರ [ ಕ್ರಿ ಶ 1881 ] ದಂದು ಶ್ರೀ ಹರಿಯ ಪಾದಾರವಿಂದವನ್ನು ಸೇರಿದರು - ಇವರ ವೃಂದಾವನ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಗೊಂಡೋಪಂತ ಛತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. *****
