The first yati head of Puthige maTha was Shri Upendra Teertha. He was very dear to Acharya Madhva and served him with a lot of devotion. When Acharya and his disciples were on their second pilgrimage to Badri, they were attacked by a band of robbers. Under the Acharya’s inspiration and with his blessings, Shri Upendra Teertha fought with the robbers and single-handedly drove them away! Such was the power of the grace of Acharya on Sri Upendra Teertha. Acharya gave Shri Upendra Teertha an icon of Lord Panduranga Vittala.
The lineage following Sri Upendra Teertha is the one that we today know as Sri Puthige Matha and the main icon illuminating Sri Puthige Matha is the Lord Panduranga Vittala given by Acharya Madhwa.

info from wikipedia----> Puthige Matha (Kannada: ಪುತ್ತಿಗೆ ಮಠ) or Puthige Mutt in some records and literature is a Madhwa Vaishnava monastery. It is one of the Ashta Mathas of Udupi founded by Dvaita philosopher Madhvacharya of Udupi.[1] The first pontiff of Puthige matha was Sri Upendra Tirtha,[2] who was a direct disciple of Sri Madhvacharya, the founder of the Dvaita school of philosophy. The main idols worshipped in the Puthige matha are that of Panduranga (Vittala),[3] which was given to Sri Upendra Tirtha by Sri Madhvacharya. Till date, there have been 29 pontiffs who have headed the matha.

Shri Puthige Matha
A tiny village Called Pajaka Kshetra in West coast of southern India in Karnataka was predestined to be the birth place of a sage called Shri Madhwacharya in the history of our land in 12th century AD, whose voice became an oasis of spiritual guidance for the "Waste Land and Hollow Men" of Kaliyuga who were hopelessly lost in their Godless World.
His childhood, boyish days, ascendancy to sainthood, preaching of philosophy, his speech, walk, physical look, and everything about him showed to the whole world that he was not a mortal but a spiritual messenger of the paradise on an earthly mission. Such an angel appeared on this soil 800 years ago. The temple of Lord Krishna in Udupi founded by him has made this temple town the most revered sacred piligrimage centre of India.
Among his disciples who were destined to see him and hear him and could call themselves his followers, Shri Upendra Teertha was the most important one whose name finds mention in his Biography "Shri Sumadhwa Vijaya". The monastery that has come down to us through him is called Shri Puthige Matha.
The main idols worshiped in the Puthige Matha are that of Panduranga (Vittala),which was given to Shri Upendra Tirtha by Shri Madhvacharya.
The present pontiff, Shri Sugunendra Teertha the 30th in his lineage, was born in 1962 (Shubhakrithu Bhadrapada Bahula Thritheeya) and received sanyasa in 1974 (Chaandra Aananda, Chaithra, Bahula Dvirheeya).
Established a full fledged Goshala at moola matha in Puthige.Every day after main pooja, Go-Pooja is carried out before theertha prasada. There are nearly 50+ cows right now which cater to daily Abhisheka for the Lord as well as milk and curds for students. - Upendra Tirtha-Sri Madhwavijaya mentions a story of Sri Upendra teeertha. Sri Madhva undertook a second trip to Badari. On the way, many interesting incidents took place. Once, after Sri Madhva and his followers crossed the Ganga river, the troops of a Muslim ruler arrested all of them. Sri Madhva explained to the King that it was the same Supreme Being that all people on earth worshipped and therefore he feared none. Looking at the fearless saint and impressed by his words, the King offered many gifts to Sri Madhva (all of which were politely refused) and permitted them to leave.
On another occasion, a band of dacoits attacked the party. Sri Madhva asked Upendra Tirtha, his disciple, to confront them. Sri Upendra Tirtha, who went on to become one of the eight disciples who got the opportunity of worshipping Sri Krishna at Udupi, and who is the founder of the Puthige Matha, fought like a man possessed and drove away the bandits.

Idol of Vittala with Rukmini and Satyabhama
Jagadguru Sri Madhwacharya, who preached Tatvavada also installed Krishna idol in Udupi and appointed 8 saints to worship the same on rotational basis. These saints became the heads of 8 different mutts called Ashta mutts. Puttige mutt is one such mutt. Sri Upendra Theertha is the first pontiff of this mutt.
Next to Sode Mutt in the southern portion of the Car Street is Puttige Mutt. The main branch of this Mutt is in the village by name Puttige. The idol of Vittala with Rukmini and Satyabhama gifted to the first pontiff Sri Upendra Theertha by the Acharya Madhwa is worshipped here. The idol has a smiling face with conch in one hand. The other hand with abhaya mudra is placed on the waist. Since other two Mutts also have the idol of Vittala, the idol of this Mutt is known as Upendra Vittala to distinguish this from the other idols as the one worshipped by the pontiff Upendra Theertha.
Below is brief description about the saints of Puttige mutt guru parampare.
