Ashrama Shishyaru – Sri Vidyanidhi Tirtharu for Uttaradimutt

Sri Ramachandra Tirtharu initially gave ashrama to Sri Vibudendra Tirtharu and appointed him as his successor.  The period of shishya sweekar is not recorded.  It is said that he went on Tirtha yatre & Digvijaya,  as he could not return during the last stages of Sri Ramachandra Tirtharu, he decided to accept another pontiff  as his successor renamed him as “Sri Vidyanidhi Tirtharu”.    Later on Sri Vibudendra Tirtharu also returned from his digvijaya, and both the seers continued the parampare for the good of Madhwa philosophy.  As a result, more and more people had the opportunity of upadcesha of Madhwa philosophy.    There emerged two mutts, one with Vibudendra Tirtha parampare – now called as Rayara Mutt; and the other one with Vidyanidhi Tirtha parampare – called as Uttaradimutt.  This enabled spread of Tatva amongst larger section of the world – with different mutts.
The vrundavana of Sri Ramachandra Tirtharu is situated near the cave where Teekaraayaru wrote most of his teekas and Srimanyaayasudha Granthaas, i.e., @ Yergola Cave which is about 17 Kilometers from Yadgir, Sedam Taluk in Gulbarga District.

info from madhwamrutha.org--->
Sri Ramachandra Theertha is 10th saint from Madhwacharya of the main parampare and continued the task of his guru Sri Vageesha theertha to stabilize madhwa society post-split. He continues to be harmonious with other madhwa linage in a very challenging period. He gave an unparalleled & great scholar & leader Sri Vibudhendra theertha to madhwa society as his successor to continue his linage. He encouraged him to take up an unparalleled task to spread Sri Madhwacharya’s philosophy in Kashi & other the greatest learning centre of Bharata varsha, which no other peetadhipathi has ever done in Madhwa history.

Sri Madhavashastry was a learned scholar & follower of the Madhwa philosophy. He was respected & trusted person in the madhwa society during that period. Sri Vageesha theertha hence selected Sri Madhava Shastri as his successor to continue his efforts to stabilize the post-split situation between Sri Rajendra theertha & Sri Kaveendra Theertha’s linages. Sri Vageesha theertha instructed his disciple to spread Sri Madhwacharya’s message to society, and also to focus on stabilizing the Sri Madhwa society & to avoid any further breakup of Madhwa society & to be harmonious with its other linage.
Blessed with the special task Sri Ramachandra theertha continued his guru’s mission to stabilize & re-organize resources throughout Vijayanagar. During this period Vijayanagar started to take shape as a kingdom & started grow towards glory. With emerging condition Sri Ramachandra theertha took tour to many places in the kingdom. His main ambition was to consolidate the Madhwa society & spread his message.
During such tour he reached Srirangapattana a spiritual place near Mysore in Karnataka; He participated in many sabha’s & discussion with scholars. He met a young, brilliant & unparalleled scholar Sri Raghunatha Bhatta with sheer deeksha in Madhwa Siddhanta. Apart from that Raghunatha Bhatta was a Poorvashrama relative of Sri Ramachandra Theertha & was a profound student of Sri Rajendra Theertha. Sri Rajendra Theertha developed Sri Raghunatha Bhatta as the leader of the team prepared to spread the wings of Madhwa Philosophy to far beyond Vijayanagar. Sri Ramachandra Theertha without second thought decided that Sri Raghunatha Bhatta is the right person who can succeed him & can protect Madhwa Siddhanta & take it to new heights. Indeed the Madhwa Siddhanta needed a sheer able person like Raghunatha Bhatta to protect the on slots of the various schools of Siddhanta, namely Advaita, Shaiva, Jain, Bouddha which were already well established in large part of the Indian Subcontinent & Dwaitha Siddhanta was a very new thought not known to many scholars / people. Considering all these facts Sri Ramachandra Theertha had a long discussion with Sri Raghunatha Bhatta explained his ambition, prepared & gave him to sanyasa. He named him as Sri Vibudhendra theertha (“The Leader of the Learned”) as per procedures of mutt in presence of elderly & wise men. With renewed energy Sri Ramachandra Theertha together with his beloved Shishya moved all over the places around Vijayanagar during which Sri Vibudhendra theertha took on many debate with scholars of many schools of thought & spread Madhwa philosophy in the region for many years together.
Sri Vibudhendra Theertha who had been part of Sri Rajendra Theertha’s mission to spread Acharya’s Tatvavada to all learning centres across Bharata varsha expressed his wish to take a tour to “Kashi” which was the centre of philosophical knowledge filled with learned people. Both Sri Ramachandra theertha & Sri Vibudhendra theertha knew that, if Madhwa philosophy has to prevail there must win over the most learnt scholars in philosophy in India who were present in Kashi. Sri Ramachandra theertha over joyed with his successor’s ambition readily agreed to his thought. He also knew the difficulties of travelling all the way to Kashi due to his age factor & also knew that the Sri Rajendra Theertha’s linage is also fully engaged in similar task in eastern part of the Bharata varsha & hence that linage was started recognised as “Purvadi Mutt”. He felt it is wise to stay back in Vijayanagar to continue & maintain establishment in southern part of Bharata varsha with limited resources, hence Sri Ramachandra Theertha’s linage was started recognized as “Dakshinadhi Mutt”.  He prepared his beloved Shishya to take up the tour which no other sanyasi from south took after Sri Adi Shankaracharya, i.e. to engage in philosophical debate in Kashi & other knowledge centres near Kashi to establish a new Philosophy initiated by Sri Madhwacharya.
Sri Ramachandra theertha being a learned & wise person knew the importance & need of such herculean task immediately appointed Sri Vibudhendra theertha as his successor with proper procedures of Pattabhisheka. He handed over all the rights that was passed on to him by Sri Vageesha theertha which was originated all along from Sri Padmanabha theertha, i.e. Titles, Sri Raghupati bhandara which includes the idols given/worshipped by Madhwacharya, property, library (containing books/Grantha’s written from Vedavyasa, Srimadacharya, Sri Jayatheertha & others), Royal recognitions / signs & learned scholars & followers. Along with those which are needed as sign of peetadhipathi for scholarary status, Sri Ramachandra theertha gave him all the main deities/idols of Samsthana i.e. Sri Digvijaya Rama, Sri Jayarama & other idols worshiped by Srimadacharya & Sri Jayatheertha etc. He kept only Sri Moola Rama and Moola Seeta idol with some minimal pooja accessories for his daily worship. He kept only some working class people to manage day to day administration of the mutt with him. Sri Ramachandra theertha blessed Sri Vibudhendra theertha with his fully heart & sent him to one of the greatest task that any one took in Madhwa society.

The other disciples of Sri Rajendra Theertha Jayadhwaja Theertha, Vishnudasacharya had already engaged in propagating madhwa philosophy in eastern part of Bharata varsha i.e. around Nava dweepa in eastern part (around current Bengal & Orissa).Sri Vibudhendra theertha went straight to heart of learning centre in north i.e. Kashi and started engaging in debates to establish Sri Madhwa philosophy.
Sri Ramachandra theertha continued with his lean team & camped around Vijayanagar to manage day to day activities to spread Tatvavada. As days months & years passed on he started getting the news of his beloved Shishya Sri Vibudhendra Theertha’s success in establishing Sri Madhwacharya’s  philosophy by defeating high quality scholars in discussions/debates & getting recognized by all scholars around Kashi. Sri Vibudhendra Theertha with the blessings of Sri Ramachandra Theertha took the glory of Sri Madhwacharya’s philosophy to a height that no other’s achieved in history of madhwa Siddhanta. This was the best gift any guru can get from his disciple, what more he can ask. Sri Ramachandra theertha overwhelmed by his successor’s achievement & offered it to Sri Madhwacharya & Lord Sri Moola Rama & Seetadevi.
During this glorious period, when he was passing through a place called Yeragola (a village near current Yadagiri) Sri Ramachandra theertha started losing his health conditions seriously & he understood that it would be his last days. Immediately he sent messenger to trace his beloved Shishya & successor Sri Vibudhendra theertha, who was heavily touring in Himalayan region to comeback & take complete charge of the mutt. Within few days his health deteriorated further & Sri Ramachandra theertha understood that it is time to protect the remaining property which was with him is to be handed over only to his successor Sri Vibudhendra theertha. He remembered his guru’s instruction to avoid further breaking the community by appointing other successor, he called upon prominent people, chief of the village & explained them the extraordinary situation to them & in front of them he buried (Bhoogata) the minor deities/idols along with moola Rama Seetha. That include Sri Moola Rama & Seetha idol along with some minor idols that he kept with him to do daily upasana. Sri Ramachandra theertha instructed & took the promise from villagers & its chief that those properties including idols should be handed over to his Shishya & successor Sri Vibudhendra Theertha whenever he returns back from his tour. He asked the head of the village to be custodian of the property which was belonged to mutt.
Sri Ramachandra Theertha instructed his remaining working class people (Karma charakaru like Balaseve, Paricharaka, Cook, watchmen etc.) to protect the place daily and to safeguard it.
With this arrangement made Sri Ramachandra Theertha felt peace in mind that the material will reach Sri Vibudhendra theertha & left this world with a very unique circumstance on the sixth day of Vaishakha Shudha in Nala Samvatsara at Yeragola village.
The administrative & working class people who were with Sri Ramachandra theertha continued to stay in Yeragola village with huge wealth of mutt and were waiting for its owner Sri Vibudhendra theertha.

info from uttaradimutt.org---> Shri Ramachandra Teertha was a great exponent of Dwaitha Vedanta. He spent a long time in Shrirangapatnam and surrounding areas propagating the Madhva Philosophy.
Once he fell seriously ill and ordained one of his disciples Kambhaluri Narasimhacharya to sanyasa with a view of installing him to the pontifical seat before he passed away. He was named Shri Vibhudendra Teertha. However, Shri Ramachandra Teertha got well and had postponed the anointment. He gave Shri Vibhdendra Teertha some minor idols and saligramas for daily worship, but none from the pooja box of the Matha and ordered him on tour for propagation of Madhwa Philosophy with specific instructions that he would send for him at the appropriate time. However, when Shri Ramachandra Teertha was at Yaragola, he fell ill again and the time came for formally handing over the Matha. Shri Vibhudendra Teertha, who was on the tour, could not come back to yaragola in time. Shri Ramachandra Tirtha, therefore was compelled to ordain Shri Vidyanidhi Teertha as his successor. Shri Ramachandra Tirtha did not want to deprive Shri Vibhudendra Tirtha from the pontification of the Uttaradi Matha. He therefore asked Dharmanna and other villagers of Yaragola to intern the pooja box after his Nirvana in a deep pit, with clear instructions that if Shri Vibhudendra Tirtha came within six months of his passing away, he would take it out and succeed him. If however he did not turn up within the specified time, the pooja box should be handed over to Shri Vidyanidhi Tirtha, who would be the next Peethadhipati and rightful successor to the seat of Uttaradi Matha.
When Shri Vibhudendra Tirtha did not turn up after six months, Dharmanna and others requested Shri Vidyanidhi Tirtha to take the pooja box to perform the usual pooja who waited for an extra period of 11 days more in expectation of the arrival of Shri Vibhudendra Tirtha but event then HH didn't arrive. When Dharmanna and others were ready to dig to take out the pooja box, suddenly Shri Vibhudendra Tirtha made his appearance and demanded to deliver the pooja box to him without any delay. Then Dharmanna regretted to hand over the pooja box to Vibhudendra Tirtha since he did not abide by the condition imposed by his Guru Shri Ramachandra Tirtha. When Vibhudendra Tirtha persisted strongly, Dharmanna and others decide to leave everything to the Moolarama himself, by imposing one condition that the two saints should offer the prayers one after the other and it would be taken over by him at whose prayers the earth whose under the pooja box was kept sunders. The two saints agreed to the suggestions made by Dharmanna and others.
Shri Vibhudendra Tirtha being the senior saint first offered the prayers for three days. Nothing happened. On the fourth day it was the turn of Shri Vidyanidhi Tirtha. He prayed to God by chanting the portion of fifth skandha of Bhagavata Purana. After a few minutes suddenly the soil where the pooja box was kept sundered and came up a few inches above the surface of the ground. Then the villagers of the Yaragola asked Shri Vidyanidhi Tirtha to take over the pooja box and the samsthana of the Uttaradi Matha. Thus Sri Matha was presided by the Shri Vidyanidhi Tirtha, the rightful successor of Shri Ramachandra Tirtha.
Shri Vibhudendra Tirtha started another math known as Kumbhakonam Math which after the advent of his sixth pontifical successor Shri Raghvendra Tirtha came to be known as Shri Raghvendra Math of Mantralaya.

Sri Madhava Theertharu was the third 'acarya' to reside on the Pitha after the disappearance of Sriman Madhvacharyaru. His purvashrama name was Vishnu Shastri,

The senior most direct disciples of Sri Ananda Tirtha (Madhvacharyaru) were Sri Padmanbha Theertharu, Sri Narahari Theertharu, Sri Madhava Theertharu and Sri Akshobhya Theertharu. In the same order they were the pontiffs of what latter became known as the Sri Uttaradi Mutt with an ending year of 1324 AD, 1332 AD, 1350 AD and 1365 AD, respectively. Some suggest that Sri Akshobhya Theertharu obtained his sannyasa ashrama from Sri Madhava Theertharu, however Akshobhya Theertharu was a sannyasi when Sriman Madhvacharyaru installed him with the others at Kanva Tirtha to be the heads of the various Mutts

Sri Madhava Theertharu also established the Majjige Halli Mutt near Mulubagal (Karnataka) and deputed Sri Madhurai Theertharu (one of his disciples) to look after the mutt. The Majjjige Halli Mutt worships the Veera Rama Idol personally worshipped by Sri Madhava Tirtha. He also started Kanva Mutt.

He also gave 'ashrama' to Sri Akshobhya Theertharu and installed him as the Pith Adipatya or pontiff of Sri Uttaradi Mutt to worship the idols/Deities which were personally worshipped by Sriman Madhvacharyaru himeself.

Once a marvellous incident happened when Sri Madhava Theertharu was engaged in the worship of Digvijaya Rama that Sri Narahari Theertharu brought back for Sriman Madhvacharyaru. All of a sudden he moved from his place and made prostration to some great personality visible to himself and invisible to others and sat with folded hands. The whole pooja was over and Sri Madhava Theertharu most reverently took the sacred tirtha (holy water) from one who was invisible. The whole incident was clarified afterwards by Sri Madhava Theertharu himself to satisfy the curiosity of the devout spectators. He said - "The Deity of Vamsha Rama which I have now acquired with Providential grace has been endowed with special sacredness of Sriman Madhvacharyaru who came in person to worship the Deity. He worshipped in his usual grand way, took tirtha (charan-amrita) himself and blessed me with tirtha afterwards". The whole gathering was astounded at the great event. A similar incident was also reported to have been experienced by Sri Akshobya Theertharu when he was worshiiping Sri Prasanna Vittala in Pandarapur.

Sri Madhava Theertharu was quite often confused with, or known as 'the Madhwacarya' or Madhva, due to the similarity in name.

There is also a 'mayavadin' of the same name of almost the same time, consequently these two are often confused. As B.N.K.Sharma the Madhva scholar has pointed out in his book (B.N.K. Sharma. 1961. "History of the Dvaita school of Vedanta", Page 229.). The story refered to in this connection of how the other Madhava Theertharu founded the city of Vijayanagar after the discovery of a huge amount of hidden treasure is as follows. Before this, however, Madhava Theertharu lived an austere life as an ascetic in the mountains of Karnataka, who once found himself being frequented by a shepherd of the name Bukka. This poor shepherd had heard that Sri Madhava Theertharu, the great 'sannyasi', was there absorbed in thoughts of Lord Narayana, and so he decided to daily bring him some simple foodstuffs. Madhava Theertharu blessed him saying, "One day you shall be the King of all Hindustan." By this blessing, immediately all the local shepherds made him their head, and he became known as the King of that local country which governed five groups of communities - Canara, Taligas, Canguivaro, Negapatao and Badagas. In this kingdom he became known as Boca Rao and reigned for thirty seven years by the blessings of the great Sri Madhava Theertharu. Bukka conquered many kingdoms from the time he came to rule in 1343 A.D.

In his usual insistant manner K. Raghupathi Rao says, "The name Sri Madhava Theertharu referred to by you refers to Vidyaranya, the 'mayavadin guru', who founded the Vijayanagar kingdom through Bukka. He was at Sringeri too. He was defeated in debate by Akshobhya Theertharu, the debate having been umpired by the great Sri Vaishnava Sri Vedanta Desika."(K.Raghupathi Rao. 12th January 1991. Letter to JTCd.)

For some reason best known to Teekacharyaru / Sri Jaya Theertharu, while commenting on almost every other 'acarya' completely ignored any works of Madhava Theertharu, not even mentioning him in any way shape or form!(BNK Sharma. 1961. History of the Dvaita School of Vedanta. page 229.) Some Madhvas even suggest that Madhava Theertharu left the association of Vaishnavas, going over to the 'enemy camp'. Other Madhvas' were extremely upset to think that anyone could even suggest such a thing. The Poona Prajna Vidya Pitha said, "However, Sri Madhava Theertharu, the disciple of Sriman Madhvacharyaru is not related in the establishment of Vijayanagara."(Tirumala Kulkarni, Bangalore).

B N K Sharma suggests that it was simply that, "......he had probably no literary leanings."(BNK Sharma. 1961. History of the Dvaita School of Vedanta. page 229.) And that this is why there is next to nothing is writen in the 'mutt' records to glorify his deeds. This cannot be said for sure, but one would think that as the pontiff for 17 years something would be known.

All that we could find is that Sri Madhava Theertharu was in office at the Vedanta Pitha from 1333 A.D., until 1350 A.D., when he passed away. Some say that he made a commentary on the Parasara Smrti called Parasara Madhva-vijaya, and some other books have also been accredited to him (Rg, Yajus and Saama Veda commentaries), most people consider this very complimentary, but possibly unfounded. As little is known of him, there is much confusion maybe mis-identifying him with others.

It is said that his bodily remains were entombed at Hampi, but have since been moved to Manur on the Bhima River of Bijapur District. Very recently, a mritika brindavana of Sri Madhava Theertharu was installed in Mulubagal.

The Mahalaya Amavasya (which usually falls in the month of Aswin) is this great saint's aradhana (disappearance anirversary).
